The Narvir Tanaji Malusare was occupied with getting ready for his child, Rayaba's wedding when he was gathered by Shivaji for a gathering. Tanaji put the wedding plans on hold and quickly left for the gathering. On hearing Shivaji's arrangement to recover Kondhana stronghold close Pune from the Mughals, Tanaji assumed responsibility for the battle and began his arrangements.

After arriving at the foot of the fortification, Tanaji and his unit of 300 soldiers were said to have scaled the post from the western side on a dull night with the assistance of a trained Bengal screen reptile (called ghorpad in Marathi) named Yashwanti to which they were said to have tied ropes and sent creeping up top to the slope of the stronghold. After two bombed endeavors, Tanaji and his men effectively scaled the precarious slope fortification.

A furious battle occurred between the powers of Tanaji and Udaybhan. During the fight, Tanaji broke his shield yet he kept battling by tying his upper piece of clothing over his protecting hand so as to avert Udaybhan's blows. The stronghold was in the long run vanquished yet all the while, Tanaji was gravely injured and passed on battling on the combat zone. After hearing the destruction of Tanaji, Shivaji was hit with sadness and communicated his distress by articulating, "Gad ala, pan sinha gela" ("The Fort is caught, yet the Lion is dead")
